EverCrisp Provides Top-Notch Eating Experience

U-pick and retail farm market, wholesale/packers

“Customers love it on first bite,” says Brian Garwood of the MAIA-1 apple – marketed as EverCrisp®.

Each season, thousands of families from the greater Chicago and South Bend metro areas visit Garwood Orchards for farm fresh apples and produce. “EverCrisp apples are a great variety for retail farm markets and u-pick growers. Customers are looking for that sweet, crisp apple,” says Brian.

In 2017, Brian’s young MAIA-1 trees were in their third leaf of production. He’s expecting 4,000 more trees to be producing marketable fruit next year and has more trees going in the ground, too.

The late-season EverCrisp apples attract continued crowds throughout October, after the Honeycrisp picking wraps up. The two apples are marketed at the same premium price point. In addition to signage describing the new variety, Brian says the price point commands customers’ attention that the apple comes with a top-notch eating experience.

Garwood Orchards also sold 18-bushel bins of EverCrisp to other farm markets in the Indianapolis area this year. As production grows to support demand, he expects EverCrisp apples to be successful with grocery retailers.

“If you have a great apple, people will come and get it,” Brian notes. “EverCrisp is an apple I’m hoping to pay the bills with!”

Apple industry outlook: The best quality eating apples that stay crisp and have good texture will win with the customer.

Future of EverCrisp apples: With the EverCrisp apple available to general growers, we are providing huge exposure to the new variety through farm markets and u-pick orchards. Once customers try one, they just pick EverCrisp apples. Customers will demand the sweet, crisp apples at their local retailers, too.
